Why wouldn’t Kobe Bryant want to play in Italy?

Why wouldn’t Kobe Bryant want to play in Italy?

Kobe Bryant(notes) has been offered $6.7 million to play for Virtus Bologna, an Italian team. The contract can be stripped-down to a per-game pay scale, and he can leave the squad should the NBA lockout ever end. Better yet, Bryant was raised in the country. Honestly, what's not to like?
If the NBA season is to start on time, the two sides embroiled in this current lockout have quite a bit of work to do over the next few weeks. Most peg a cutoff spot to cancel the rest of the preseason and possibly the first few weeks of the regular season as some date in mid-October, and though we're hearing encouraging on-record winks and nods from within this mess, both sides still have a fair amount of cohesion to develop within their particular ranks before they can actually come to an agreement as to what they're fighting for.
[Related: Kobe prepared to loan players money during NBA lockout]
In the meantime, Kobe could jet off to Italy. No strings attached.
Bryant was raised in Italy, growing up there before returning to suburban Philadelphia to finish his high school career. His father Joe "Jellybean" Bryant was a star of sorts over there, and Kobe grew up idolizing Knick coach and former Italian league star Mike D'Antoni. So to play in the country on a per-month or even per-game basis with an out for once the lockout ends? Where's the issue with that?
From the AP:
Virtus Bologna general manager Massimo Faraoni tells The Associated Press he's been on conference calls between Bryant's agent, Rob Pelinka, Bologna president Claudio Sabatini and main sponsor Canadian Solar, which would provide the cash for such a deal.
"I think the fact that he's lived in Italy makes this appealing to him," Faraoni said.
Virtus has given Bryant four different contract options, stretching from the one-year deal to two-month and one-month options, and a per-game deal that would come out to $739,640 per home game.
All of the offers are pretax and would allow Bryant to return to the Lakers immediately if the lockout ends.
I see only three reasons why Kobe Bryant would not want to make the jump.
The most obvious and most relatable is the fact that he has a family, with kids in school, and jumping overseas would either mean leaving his family for an extended spell, or uprooting the entire clan. Sad wonks in the comment section can crack wise considering Kobe's past, but by all indications the man is a committed father, and this is no easy task for a player with a family, regardless of his history with the country.
Secondly? The guy was dragging around his right knee last year, undergoing midseason operations that weren't widely reported at the time to drain fluid and keep him somewhat short of teeth-gnashingly in pain for short stretches before the burn came back again. Nobody has logged heavier NBA hours since 1996, when Bryant entered the league, and it's not even close. The guy could use the time off, even if the NBA season starts on time.
Finally, he's been a Laker for life. And in spite of flirting with the Clippers and Bulls back in 2004, and asking for a trade three years later, Bryant has stayed committed to that ideal. It's a rare one, these days, with free agency, age, and bad basketball decisions (by the team or player) leading to a nomadic lifestyle for even Hall of Fame-level players, and Kobe is the rare modern player that stands out.
It seems like the perfect out. His old league, in a way. His old country. A good chunk of change (though around a quarter of what he would make in the NBA this year), and the ability to play the game he's clearly obsessed with at a level that at least approximates NBA ball. And the freedom to jump back to the NBA once he gets a text from Roger Mason(notes) Jr.
How far away is an end to this lockout? In terms of negotiations? Far, far away. Again, both sides have plenty of work to do in-house, determining a cogent and consistent message, before even returning to the table. But that doesn't mean the chains haven't been moved.
From Ken Berger, at CBS:
The owners' number, one of the people familiar with the details said, represented a willingness to move off their most recent formal proposal to cap player salaries at $2 billion a year for the bulk of a 10-year proposal. So, do the math: Assuming 4 percent revenue growth next season to $3.95 billion, the owners' $2 billion proposal represented roughly 50.5 percent of BRI for the players. If the players were willing to go down to, say, 53 percent with assurances that a soft cap would remain in place, that would be $2.094 billion -- leaving the two sides only $94 million apart in the first year of the deal.
Given that the owners moved off their $2 billion to somewhere between that and the players' number, we're talking about perhaps as little as $75 million per year holding up the future of the NBA. That's why, as one person familiar with the talks said Thursday, a deal is "there for the taking."
That last part is significant, as Tom Ziller pointed out on Friday, especially if the source is coming correct.
If the owners are backing off a hard cap (which, given increased revenue, could actually benefit the players down the line) and the players keep handing big bucketfuls of cash back to the owners that wildly sent bigger and bigger bucketfuls of cash to the players for years, then we could see an uneasy truce and a saved 82-game season.
If it's a 10-year deal, then this could potentially be a terrible deal for both sides. But most good deals, overall at least, are. You want both sides walking away mad. The question is, will they do it on Oct. 12, Jan. 5, or Aug. 27 of 2012?
And, in the meantime, will Kobe Bryant be jetting away from Los Angeles?
We don't know. But the offer sure looks pretty good.

The Wall Street Journal reports 50 Cent will publish his third literary work in 2012 after The Penguin Young Reader Group agreed to publish the rapper/actor’s semi-autobiographical novel, Playground. According to various reports, the book will be targeted towards young adults, and it will incorporate elements from 50 Cent’s turbulent childhood.

In addition to the upcoming Playground, 50 Cent has also published From Pieces To Weight and The 50th Law, an adaptation of The 48 Laws Of Power co-written by Robert Greene. In other, 50 Cent related news, Fif says he plans on dropping a sequel to his 2009 album Before I Self Destruct, which will also be connected to a film.

UPDATE: The cover art has been released for 50 Cent's upcoming anti-bullying novel, "Playground," releasing on November 1st (via HHNM). The description for the book has been posted in full on Amazon.com.
"Thirteen-year-old Butterball doesn't have much going for him. He's teased mercilessly about his weight. He hates the Long Island suburb his mom moved them to and wishes he still lived with his dad in the city. And now he's stuck talking to a totally out-of-touch therapist named Liz.

Liz tries to uncover what happened that day on the playground - a day that landed one kid in the hospital and Butterball in detention. Butterball refuses to let her in on the truth, and while he evades her questions, he takes readers on a journey through the moments that made him into the playground bully he is today.

This devastating yet ultimately redemptive story is told in voice-driven prose and accented with drawings and photographs, making it a natural successor to The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.

Loosely inspired by 50 Cent's own adolescence, and written with his fourteen-year-old son in mind, Playground is sure to captivate wide attention - and spark intense discussion."

Lil Wayne Plans To Record Albums With Juelz Santana, Young Money

Lil Wayne Plans To Record Albums With Juelz Santana, Young Money
Weezy preps a handful of new projects, including two more installments of his "Carter" series.
Fresh off of crossing the platinum threshold with his latest album Tha Carter IV, Lil Wayne is already thinking about the next projects. In addition to recording two more Carter albums and a sequel to Rebirth, Weezy is set to hit the studio with Juelz Santana and Young Money to lay down full-lengths.
“The next project he’s working on is I Can’t Feel My Face with [Juelz Santana],” Mack Maine told XXLMag.com. “Elz is talented man. He’s a young legend. [Wayne’s] back working in the studio. He has that and the Young Money album.”
Though they intended to release I Can’t Feel My Face some years back, the two will record entirely new material for the project. Additionally, Mack said that Young Money will begin work on the follow-up to 2009’s We Are Young Money once everyone’s schedule clears up.
“We haven’t actually recorded one verse for that album,” he continued. “When we were on tour, we said we’re gonna wait until we get back to Miami to get everybody out there. We have one more show in Hawaii then we’ll start recording. It wont take long. Too much creativity for it to take a long time.”

Yesterday, DJ Drama revealed that T.I. will release a new cut next week. According to XXLMag.com, the track will arrive on Monday and will be produced by and featuring Big K.R.I.T.

Tip, who will be released from his halfway house next Thursday, has been recording tracks since his prison release, amounting to more than a dozen tracks.
“Basically when he’s in the halfway house he’s allowed to still work,” he continued. “So he’s been in the studio working. You know I was in there the other day, by the second day that I went in I had already heard like 13, 14 songs; new songs. Pharrell came the other day when I was in there. He dropped off a couple new joints. He already sent something the day before. That was done.”

Nude Photos Of Amber Rose Leak Again, Wiz Khalifa Defends His Woman

by Allen Starbury
                                   Amber Rose leaked pics
Amber Rose was the victim of yet another nude photo leak this week, when a new set of photos leaked online.
While it's unclear when these were taken, some appear to be a apart of the same set leaked by MediaTakeOut.com back in June, which were accompanied by rumors that she sent them to Nicki Minaj's rumored boyfriend.
This time, WorldStarHipHop got a a hold of the same ones, along with some news one ... 15 in total. (See them here NSFW )
The new set, all of Rose, seem to be taken by someone else. In each, she poses on a bed and/or couch, but they are clearly taken by a separate party, presumably her boyfriend Wiz Khalifa. When were taken, and if they were all taken by the rapper, is unknown.
Roseand Wiz had previously explained that the some of the leaked photos were taken from the former stipper's laptop by a personal assistant who no longer works for her.
Since the new photos surfaced this week, Rose has been quiet on her Twitter page (@DaRealAmberRose), where she usually will address gossip and rumors. However, since Thursday (September 15) -- when they were published -- she has been absent from the social network. Her man Wiz Khalifa, who has been saying that he plans to marry her, hasn't.  He discussed the nude photo leaks to Sister 2 Sister magazine recently, in which he defends his woman and even addresses her stripper background.
"I could see if that was what she was doing while I'm with her or something like that, and it was in a disrespectful way, but it's nothing like that," the rapper said. "It's not even, like, the pictures or her past is a raunchy past. She did what she had to do. There's plenty of powerful women who overcame that, and that's what she really is, an example of what work and faith in God, you know what I'm saying, can get you into a positive situation. You can make a positive out of a negative.
Wiz also shut down critics of Amber, who claim she loves all the attention and even does things, on purpose, for publicity.
"The biggest misconception about Amber is that she wants attention," he added. "Everybody thinks that she does stuff for attention and that she loves attention, but she's really, really reserved and shy. She just gets attention 'cause she's dope."
Whatever it is, after seeing those pics, we salute you Wiz!

Health Scope: 5 Foods That Can Trigger Stroke

Few things feel more terrifying and random than a stroke, which can strike without warning. And fear of stroke -- when a blood vessel in or leading to the brain bursts or is blocked by a blood clot, starving brain cells of oxygen and nutrients -- is well founded. After all, stroke is the number-three killer in the U.S., affecting more than 700,000 people each year. Here are five foods that cause the damage that leads to stroke.
1. Crackers, chips, and store-bought pastries and baked goods
Muffins, doughnuts, chips, crackers, and many other baked goods are high in trans fats, which are hydrogenated oils popular with commercial bakeries because they stay solid at room temperature, so the products don't require refrigeration. Also listed on labels as "partially hydrogenated" or hydrogenated oils, trans fats are found in all kinds of snack foods, frozen foods, and baked goods, including salad dressings, microwave popcorn, stuffing mixes, frozen tater tots and French fries, cake mixes, and whipped toppings. They're also what makes margarine stay in a solid cube. The worst offenders are fried fast foods such as onion rings, French fries, and fried chicken.
Why it's bad
For years scientists have known trans fats are dangerous artery-blockers, upping the concentrations of lipids and bad cholesterol in the blood and lowering good cholesterol. Now we can add stroke to the list of dangers. This year researchers at the University of North Carolina found that women who ate 7 grams of trans fat each day -- about the amount in two doughnuts or half a serving of French fries -- had 30 percent more strokes (the ischemic type, caused by blocked blood flow to the brain) than women who ate just 1 gram a day. Another recent study, also in women, found that trans fats promoted inflammation and higher levels of C-reactive protein, which have been linked to an increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.
What to do
Aim to limit trans fats to no more than 1 or 2 grams a day -- and preferably none. Avoid fast-food French fries and other fried menu items and study packaged food labels closely. Even better, bake your own cookies, cakes, and other snacks. When you can't, search out "health-food" alternative snacks, such as Terra brand potato chips and traditional whole grain crackers such as those made by Finn, Wasa, AkMak, Ryvita, and Lavasch.
2. Smoked and processed meats
Whether your weakness is pastrami, sausage, hot dogs, bacon, or a smoked turkey sandwich, the word from the experts is: Watch out.
Why it's bad
Smoked and processed meats are nasty contributors to stroke risk in two ways: The preserving processes leave them packed with sodium, but even worse are the preservatives used to keep processed meats from going bad. Sodium nitrate and nitrite have been shown by researchers to directly damage blood vessels, causing arteries to harden and narrow. And of course damaged, overly narrow blood vessels are exactly what you don't want if you fear stroke.
Many studies have linked processed meats to coronary artery disease (CAD); one meta-analysis in the journal Circulation calculated a 42-percent increase in coronary heart disease for those who eat one serving of processed meat a day. Stroke is not the only concern for salami fans; cancer journals have reported numerous studies in the past few years showing that consumption of cured and smoked meats is linked with increased risk of diabetes and higher incidences of numerous types of cancer, including leukemia.
What to do
If a smoked turkey or ham sandwich is your lunch of choice, try to vary your diet, switching to tuna, peanut butter, or other choices several days a week. Or cook turkey and chicken yourself and slice it thin for sandwiches.
How to Tell if Someone Is Having a Stroke
3. Diet soda
Although replacing sugary drinks with diet soda seems like a smart solution for keeping weight down -- a heart-healthy goal -- it turns out diet soda is likely a major bad guy when it comes to stroke.
Why it's bad
People who drink a diet soda a day may up their stroke risk by 48 percent. A Columbia University study presented at the American Stroke Association's 2011 International Stroke Conference followed 2,500 people ages 40 and older and found that daily diet soda drinkers had 60 percent more strokes, heart attacks, and coronary artery disease than those who didn't drink diet soda. Researchers don't know exactly how diet soda ups stroke risk -- and are following up with further studies -- but nutritionists are cautioning anyone concerned about stroke to cut out diet soda pop.
What to do
Substitute more water for soda in your daily diet. It's the healthiest thirst-quencher by far, researchers say. If you don't like water, try lemonade, iced tea, or juice.
4. Red meat
This winter, when the respected journal Stroke published a study showing that women who consumed a large portion of red meat each day had a 42-percent higher incidence of stroke, it got nutrition experts talking. The information that red meat, with its high saturated fat content, isn't healthy for those looking to prevent heart disease and stroke wasn't exactly news. But the percentage increase (almost 50 percent!) was both startling and solid; the researchers arrived at their finding after following 35,000 Swedish women for ten years.
Why it's bad
Researchers have long known that the saturated fat in red meat raises the risk of stroke and heart disease by gradually clogging arteries with a buildup of protein plaques. Now it turns out that hemoglobin, the ingredient that gives red meat its high iron content, may pose a specific danger when it comes to stroke. Researchers are investigating whether blood becomes thicker and more viscous as a result of the consumption of so-called heme iron, specifically upping the chance of strokes.
What to do
Aim to substitute more poultry -- particularly white meat -- and fish, which are low in heme iron, for red meat. Also, choose the heart-healthiest sources of protein whenever you can, especially beans, legumes, nuts, tofu, and nonfat dairy.
5. Canned soup and prepared foods
Whether it's canned soup, canned spaghetti, or healthy-sounding frozen dinners, prepared foods and mixes rely on sodium to increase flavor and make processed foods taste fresher. Canned soup is cited by nutritionists as the worst offender; one can of canned chicken noodle soup contains more than 1,100 mg of sodium, while many other varieties, from clam chowder to simple tomato, have between 450 and 800 mg per serving. Compare that to the American Heart and Stroke Association's recommendation of less than1,500 mg of sodium daily and you'll see the problem. In fact, a nutritionist-led campaign, the National Salt Reduction Initiative, calls on food companies to reduce the salt content in canned soup and other products by 20 percent in the next two years.
Why it's bad
Salt, or sodium as it's called on food labels, directly affects stroke risk. In one recent study, people who consumed more than 4,000 mg of sodium daily had more than double the risk of stroke compared to those who ate 2,000 mg or less. Yet the Centers for Disease Control estimate that most Americans eat close to 3,500 mg of sodium per day. Studies show that sodium raises blood pressure, the primary causative factor for stroke. And be warned: Sodium wears many tricky disguises, which allow it to hide in all sorts of foods that we don't necessarily think of as salty. Some common, safe-sounding ingredients that really mean salt:
  • Baking soda
  • Baking powder
  • MSG (monosodium glutamate)
  • Disodium phosphate
  • Sodium alginate
What to do
Make your own homemade soups and entrees, then freeze individual serving-sized portions. Buy low-sodium varieties, but read labels carefully, since not all products marked "low sodium" live up to that promise.

B.o.B Settles $1,060 Tab After Stiffing Collegetown Bar

B.o.B Settles $1,060 Tab After Stiffing Collegetown Bar
UPDATE: Bobby Ray has righted the wrong of ducking out after racking up a $1K bill.
Staffers at Level B Bar in Ithaca, New York have accused rapper B.o.B and his dozen cohorts of stiffing the establishment on a $1,060 bar tab this past Saturday night.
According to The Cornell Daily Sun, owner Brad Weiss said that Bobby Ray, who performed at Barton Hall earlier that evening, ordered three bottles of $300 Grey Goose Vodka and received a complimentary bottle of champagne. The group left without paying its bill, which would have included $160 in gratuity, prompting principal waiter Anthony Vipond to chase them into the street.
“[B.o.B.’s manager] said, ‘We’re doing you a favor for not charging you … When we go to clubs, we get paid to come,’” Vipond said. “I said, ‘This is Ithaca, this is a different town. Things get handled a little differently here.’”
The bar claims that it didn’t hurt them financially and will not pursue legal action, but will think twice before treating celebrities with special service in the future.
“We decided letting it go was more prudent than calling the authorities or pursuing a possibly costly legal battle,” Weiss said. “Next time we will be more cautious about managing the expectations of our celebrity guests.”
[September 20]
UPDATE: According to The Cornell Daily Sun, B.o.B's manager Brian Richardson settled the tab with Level B Bar, offering the establishment $2,000 instead of $1,060. "I just want to make it right by Level B, and I want the people of Cornell to know that we're a class act," he said.
“They were really apologetic,” added Weiss. “High marks to these guys.”

50 Cent Talks About Fabolous/Ray J Fight, Feud With Game

50 Cent Talks About Fabolous/Ray J Fight, Feud With Game
50 Cent talks about the Fab/Ray fight, saying a punch wasn't landed and says Game's more recent comments about him are out of "desperation."
This week, Fabolous and Ray J both shared their sides of the story behind their alleged fight. Both also named 50 Cent as a witness to this altercation. As a result, Funkmaster Flex asked 50 Cent about the quarrel, looking for more information about the incident. During the interview, 50 also shared his thoughts on Game's disses and more.
When discussing the Ray J/Fabolous feud, 50 noted that there was a minor scuffle. According to Fif, Ray J approached Fabolous in a manner that was somewhat aggressive. However, he also acknowledged that while there was a swing, the punch did not land.
"[Ray J] pushed at [Fabolous]. Soon as he came, he tapped him on both shoulders and said, 'I told you my peoples weren't gonna like that.' Then, there was that swing he's talking about...There was a swing but it didn't land on nothing so you can't call it a punch. Ray J did swing at him [but] if he connected, [Fabolous] would have had a mark on him or something."
He also noted that Ray J may have been drinking before this took place.
"I think he had a little bit of juice in him. You know what I'm saying? I think Ray had a little something."
Flex also turned the discussion to Game, a longtime rival of 50 Cent. According to the New York DJ, Game made comments regarding 50 Cent's sexual orientation. To this, 50 replied that "it's desperation" on Game's part.
"It's desperation...If that's a valid question, they really just need to ask the young ladies," he said. "What song is playing right now, Flex, from his new LP?"

Russell Simmons Plans To Buy Television Network

Russell Simmons Plans To Buy Television Network

The proven businessman seeks to extend his reach and build a network that promotes real diversity.
Russell Simmons divulged on Monday that he has plans of venturing into the television industry. According to the Wall Street Journal, the Hip Hop mogul is looking into buying a television network that focuses on diversity. During an interview at a charity event in Hong Kong, Simmons said he believes that when networks claim "diversity," what they really mean is "segregation" and an exclusive focus on black culture. "Instead, there's all these cultures that should be more integrated properly…Instead of giving Paris Hilton a show, for example, you could do one with Amber Rose. You'd be better off. One is hot, the other is not."

In an effort to bring a Hollywood feel to network TV, he is currently working with Brian Grazer, producer behind the films 8 Mile and American Gangster, and Ron Howard who worked with Grazer on films like A Beautiful Mind and Apollo 13.

Although an official announcement has not yet been issued, Simmons emphasized that he would definitely follow through with the business plan. "Now you've heard about it," he said. "It's going to happen."

Pharrell Speaks On The Cycle Of Music, Says Rick Ross "Is Killing It”

Pharrell Speaks On The Cycle Of Music, Says Rick Ross
Pharrell Williams comments on rapper Rick Ross, says music is in a good place at the moment.
Rapper/producer Pharrell Williams shared his thoughts on the state of music and also expressed his appreciation for rapper Rick Ross and his music in a recent interview with Vibe Magazine.
Pharrell explained that after a certain number of years the music from a particular decade tends to become “unrecognizable.”
“Next year, music will not sound the way – you will not recognize the music of the last couple of years. It always happens,” Pharrell explained. “If you notice every five years music changes and every 10 years the decade previous is completely unrecognizable. Everything is cyclical. Hip Hop is music so it’s the same thing. Everything changes.”
Later in the interview Pharrell shared his thoughts on Rick Ross, stating that we haven’t had a genuine artist like him in quite some time.
“The way Ross is killing it right now. It’s been a minute since the last time we had somebody like him to come out and do what he’s doing or like a Wayne,” said Pharrell. “It’s just like completely authentic and knows what he wants to do. Knows his sound, has a style, has a definitive position, has a perspective on the game and what he adds to it and how he’s gonna change it. So music’s in a really, really good place now and I’m watching it. I’m in the studio and everything is changing. I’m thankful to be a part of it. ”

Killer Mike To Join Demonstrators To Protest Troy Davis Execution

Killer Mike To Join Demonstrators To Protest Troy Davis Execution

UPDATE #2: Killer Mike tells HipHopDX of his plans to protest Troy Davis' scheduled execution.
Protesters will gather in Atlanta, Georgia this morning (September 19) to halt the execution of Troy Davis, scheduled for this Wednesday (September 21).
Davis' representatives will be presenting their case for clemency at 9:00 AM this morning at a hearing in front of Georgia's Board of Pardons and Paroles, reports the Ledger-Enquirer.
Davis was convicted 20 years ago and sentenced to death for the 1989 murder of Georgia police officer Mark MacPhail.
However, hundreds of thousands have signed petitions urging the board to spare Davis due to the controversial nature of the case. Former President Jimmy Carter and Pope Benedict XVI are among those who have asked that Davis get a new trial.
"The case against him consisted entirely of witness testimony which contained inconsistencies even at the time of the trial," says Amnesty International's website. "Since then, all but two of the state's non-police witnesses from the trial have recanted or contradicted their testimony."
"Many of these witnesses have stated in sworn affidavits that they were pressured or coerced by police into testifying or signing statements against Troy Davis."
Perhaps the most chilling aspect of the case is the fact that one of the two witnesses who has not recanted his testimony, Sylvester "Red" Coles, is the principle alternative suspect. Amnesty International reports the nine individuals have signed affidavits implicating Coles in the crime.

More on this story as it develops. Below, watch Jasiri X's "I Am Troy Davis (T.R.O.Y.)," a track dedicated to raising awareness about this issue.

UPDATE: The Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles denied Troy Davis' bid for clemency.
"It is with a very heavy heart and a deep sense of outrage that I let you know that the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles voted to deny clemency to Troy Davis," said a letter sent from Amnesty International.

"This means that very little is standing in the way of the state of Georgia executing a potentially innocent man this Wednesday, September 21 st at 7pm."
"The actions of the Board are astounding in the face of so much doubt in the case against Troy Davis. However, we are not prepared to accept the decision and let anyone with the power to stop the execution off the hook."
Amnesty asks that Troy Davis supporters call Chatham County's District Attorney's office by either telephone: (912)-652-7308 or Fax: (912) 652-7328.
"We'll be organizing a Day of Protest today to express our outrage at the recent decision to deny Troy Davis clemency," added Amnesty. "And on Wednesday (Sept. 21), we're calling for a Day of Vigil on Troy's impending execution date. If you are able to organize locally for either of these events, please tell us about your plans."
UPDATE #2: Killer Mike has spoken to HipHopDX.com about the issue, and has revealed plans to join protesters tomorrow (September 21) to challenge the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles' decision.
"I am going to [Savannah, Georgia tonight] to join the protest tomorrow. the state of Georgia is killing a man who is possibly innocent and that's a tragedy," said Mike.
HipHopDX has also learned that the Georgia Parole board is currently taking phone calls at (404) 656-5651, and counting the number of individuals calling in support of Troy Davis. To reach the proper department, dial 5 in the first touch tone menu.

Beauty & Brains: Felicia "Feeva" Daniel

After working with Ne-Yo, this model and business-owner speaks to HipHopDX's Beauty & Brains about her path, hiatus, and a future in film.
From videos featuring Rick Ross to a childcare center, Felicia “Feeva” Daniel is trying to find a balance. This is nothing new to the seasoned model. When she was seventeen, Daniel was already getting major magazine coverage, appearing in Teen magazine as the first African-American Teen Beauty from her state. That success in the modeling world was stalled by motherhood, but true to form, she found a way to balance being a mom with being a student and obtaining her qualifications for a childcare business.
Once her business was settled, she began to reconnect with her modeling roots. Now, she’s back on the scene, with a renewed vision and focus, a drive that has allowed her to travel with Ne-Yo and work with other artists. She recently caught up with Beauty & Brains to discuss the difficulties of balancing two sides of her life and the advice she would have for anyone trying to break into the modeling world.

Beauty & Brains: When did you get into modeling and what led you to choose that path?
Felicia Daniel: I started modeling as a teenager, although I didn’t continue. I modeled for two years and then I stopped for quite a while. I picked it back up four years ago. What led me to that path was a love for the craft. I had a knack for being in front of the camera. My uncle’s a photographer and he used to take pictures of me here or there. He used to tell me I was photogenic and that’s how it came about.
Beauty & Brains: What made you stop for a while?
Felicia Daniel: I just took a break for it. When I was younger, I was modeling for the more mainstream type of modeling, the more typical modeling. I had a child and took a break to start my family.
Beauty & Brains: We hear you’re a business owner. What type of business did you start?
Felicia Daniel: I started my own childcare business.
Beauty & Brains: Why did you choose to get into that field?

Felicia Daniel: I have a love for kids and I always have. I did some studying on early childhood education and from there I knew that’s what I wanted. So, I continued on that same path.
Beauty & Brains: What would you say has been the most difficult part of modeling in the industry?
Felicia Daniel: Just branding yourself is really difficult. There’s a lot of politics behind modeling and it’s just a lot of work in general. Balancing my business and family, it makes it very difficult to brand myself the way I would like to. That’s what took me so long to start back up after starting my family.
Beauty & Brains: Seeing what goes on in the industry and what a difficult field the modeling world can be, what advice would you give a former student of yours who comes back and asks for advice on modeling?
Felicia Daniel: I feel if you follow your heart and basically work as hard as you can, something may come out of it. I can’t say something will come out of it because sometimes, people have dreams that may not be something that’s possible. I always feel you should have a backup plan but that you should follow your heart. Follow your heart, see where it leads you but also, always have a backup plan.
Beauty & Brains: What are your goals for the next few years in life and work?
Felicia Daniel: My goal right now is to basically brand my name and see where it leads me as far as modeling but also keep a hold of my business and continue with that. The market, right now, isn’t that great, for modeling. So, as far as financially, I don’t know if that will hold me up but that’s my passion. I will continue with that, see where it leads me and I have my business as a backup plan.
Beauty & Brains: Do you have an interest to get into movies?
Felicia Daniel: I definitely have an interest in going into movies. I don’t have the resources where I am here so much, so it’s hard for me to get in the door that way. So, I figured I’d get in the door through modeling. Hopefully that carries me onto that next step. That is my ultimate goal, my ultimate dream. I know a lot of the times, it’s meshed together, nowadays, it’s meshed together, like movies and music. A lot of musicians are on the big sreen now and vice versa. You need a lot of actors for modeling gigs and models for acting gigs. It’s all meshed together now.
Beauty & Brains: I know you’ve been an extra in a 50 Cent movie. What kind of movies would you like to be in?

Felicia Daniel: I’m open to anything, really. I love comedies. I love action. I like dramatic roles. So, whether it be a dramatic comedy or a sci-fi, I just would like to be able to show my talents in a strong way, not doing something too similar to my own personality. I would rather reach out and get something far from how people normally see me.
Beauty & Brains: In life or in the industry, who are some of the people you looked up to through life?
Felicia Daniel: Um, Nia Long, Tyra Banks, I mean, a lot of different people. Those are the ones that pop into my head right now.
Beauty & Brains: What about in terms of life?
Felicia Daniel: In terms of life, I would say, on a more personal note, my aunt or my grandmother. [They inspired me] just by being supportive and allowing me to be me. A lot of people wouldn’t understand. They want you to just be doing the typical thing, as far as going to school and things like that, to pursue other avenues but they basically supported me with my modeling and stuff. They believed in me. That gave me inspiration.
Beauty & Brains: Is it hard for you to balance the two sides of your life?
Felicia Daniel: Um, it is very hard for me to balance both sides right now. I’m still in the middle of [work] because I have a few clients that weren’t on time today. So, it is extremely hard to balance. I do have a very supportive family that helps me out a lot but it’s hard. Basically, you don’t want your business to suffer because of your dreams and you don’t want your dreams to suffer because of your business. Trying to balance those things out, it goes up and down on both ends. It has to happen. If you’re paying more attention to a career as a model, you’re going to be leaving a lot so you leave your business in someone else’s hand and they might not be as good as you and the clients may not be as happy dealing with another person as they are with you. With the modeling, if I choose my business, it’s an opportunity missed and you never know what could have came out of that opportunity if you could have made it.
Beauty & Brains: But you manage to persevere. What do you think helps you continue going and fight through difficulties?
Felicia Daniel: I don’t know. I feel like it’s just my personality. I’ve been a fighter my whole life and a person driven to reach my goals. For me, it’s a gift and a curse. Once I have my mind made up on what I want to do, it’s like I have tunnel vision for that goal.

'Do the Right Thing' still relevant in race-divided U.S.

By Helena de Moura, CNN

"When I wrote that film, in no way we'd think there would be an African-American president," director Spike Lee said.
"When I wrote that film, in no way we'd think there would be an African-American president," director Spike Lee said.
STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • "Do the Right Thing" considered one of the most "culturally significant" films in the U.S.
  • Director/writer Spike Lee never imagined he'd see an African-American U.S. president
  • Some reviewers had feared the 1989 movie would cause race riots
  • Lee says now, "Race is always there"
Atlanta (CNN) -- "Nineteen eighty-nine ... was the number, another summer ..."
These are the scratching, hip-hop verses sung by Public Enemy in the opening scenes of Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing," a film the U.S. Library of Congress has classified as one of the most "culturally significant" in U.S. history.
Released on June 30, 1989, the film became an ode to the angst and alienation experienced in some of America's black, inner-city neighborhoods where disenfranchised youths roam the streets, sometimes in search of jobs, sometimes trouble, and in the case of the protagonist Mookie, played by Spike Lee, sometimes in search of meaning.
"When I wrote that film, in no way we'd think there would be an African-American president in the United States of America," director Spike Lee told CNN during a recent interview at Morehouse College, the director's alma mater.
"I lived to see it ... I think that was a great testament to the growth that the country has made," he said.
Set in a predominantly black neighborhood in Brooklyn, this dramatic comedy pits African-American residents against Italian-Americans, Asians, Latino and whites, offering an explosively blunt discussion on race relations in America in a mere two blocks.
Mookie, the pizza delivery boy, navigates through the various multiethnic scenarios seamlessly until a race riot forces him to "do the right thing." It's an ambivalent decision for Mookie, who shows different levels of attachment to different groups.
According to Lee, critics lashed out against Mookie's ambivalence during the film's race rioting, claiming Lee left the audience without an answer to the conflict.
To Lee, the artist has a special role in the midst of social unrest.
"I think a lot of times the artist's job is to show what is happening now and hopefully through dialogue, conversation, discussion, you can arrive at some answers," Lee said.
"... I have no formula," he said.
"Their job is to hold the mirror up to society and say: Look, this is what's happening right now. Wake up!"
Matt Miller, an Emory University scholar of rap music and black popular culture, said "Do the Right Thing" defined a bleak decade for African-Americans, who were drawn to militant imagery as a response to the Reagan ethos of a unified America.
"The late 1980s and early 1990s were definitely a low point for African-Americans," said Miller. "This was a time when white politicians and voters had largely turned their back on African-Americans and their concerns and struggles."
African-Americans struggled with disproportionate incarceration and a failed public education system, leaving them out of the so-called "American Dream," he said.
"The crack boom of the late 1980s and the subsequent 'War on Drugs' cast a shadow over many blacks' daily lives, turning their communities into dangerous conflict zones," he said.
"Do The Right Thing" won just about every accolade in the film industry, despite fear-mongering by some reviewers who predicted the movie would cause race riots.
It was the Obamas' first film together. First lady Michelle Obama once told CNN that "Do the Right Thing" was the first film she watched with her then-future husband.
"Do the Right Thing" excited audiences worldwide with its unceremonious discussion of racism in America.
Twenty-two years later, Lee offers a skeptical view of the status quo.
"I think that in the United States, race is always there," he said. "It's simmering right below whatever level you want to call it, and it takes an outburst for it to explode.
"And Hollywood would not make 'Do the Right Thing' today. There is no flying through the air, no superheroes, you can't shoot in 3D, no explosions."

BMG Rights to buy Bug Music for $300 million

NEW YORK (Reuters) - BMG Rights Management said on Monday it would pay around $300 million to buy Bug Music, a Los Angeles song publisher whose catalog includes hits such as "What a Wonderful World" and "Under The Boardwalk."
BMG Rights reached the deal with Bug Music's owner, private equity firm Spectrum Equity Investors. The deal values Bug Music at around $300 million, according to two people familiar with the process.
With a catalog of more than 250,000 songs the auction for Bug Music had attracted interest from a range of bidders including "American Idol" creator Simon Fuller, Ole Music and Sony/ATV, a joint venture between Sony Corp and the estate of late pop star Michael Jackson.
BMG Rights is a joint venture of giant German media company Bertelsmann and private equity firm KKR. The deal is expected to close in October.
Even as global recorded music sales have tumbled in recent years, song catalogs have kept or increased their value because they can earn revenue from a wider variety of licensing sources than record sales.
Fund managers and investors like pension funds and private equity firms have been attracted by song publishers' relatively stable cash flows.
Earlier this year, Russian-born billionaire Len Blavatnik paid $3.3 billion to take control of Warner Music Group, whose assets include the music publisher Warner/Chappell.
Blavatnik is now among contenders for EMI Music's recording and publishing assets with final bids due by the end of this month, according to several sources.
BMG Rights and Sony/ATV are also known to be interested in EMI, but are more focused on EMI's publishing catalog.

Rapper Gucci Mane Sentenced to Six Months in Prison for Throwing Woman Out of Moving Car

September 13, 2011

Rapper Gucci Mane was sentenced Tuesday to six months in jail after pleading guilty to pushing a woman out of a moving vehicle, WGCL-TV reported.
The Atlanta-based rapper, whose real name is Radric Davis, was arrested in April for the January incident and charged with two counts of battery, two counts of reckless conduct and one count of disorderly conduct.
In addition to the jail sentence, Davis was sentenced by a DeKalb County Court judge to 30 months' probation and ordered to pay a $3,000 fine. He must also attend a 12-week anger management course, refrain from contacting his victim and pay her medical bills, totaling more than $5,000.
He was being held Tuesday in DeKalb County Jail.
Davis, 31, was on probation for a 2005 assault case at the time of the incident. He was also arrested in 2008 for violating that probation.
In November 2010, he was arrested following multiple traffic violations, including driving on the wrong side of the road and driving without a license.
Then in December, Davis was at the home of fellow Georgia rapper Waka Flocka Flame when it was raided by police, who found ammunition and drugs. He was detained but not arrested during the raid.
In January, Davis spent more than a week in a psychiatric hospital after his legal team claimed he was unable "to go forward and/or intelligently participate in the probation revocation hearing," according to court documents.

New York City Court Settles With Damon Dash For Illegally Selling Alcohol At DD172

New York City Court Settles With Damon Dash For Illegally Selling Alcohol At DD172
UPDATE: The music mogul and associates were accused of being a "public nuisance" and having six counts of selling alcohol without a license.
Though he moved out of his DD172 space in New York City, New York’s Tribeca neighborhood in June, Damon Dash is in legal hot water for what occurred there.
According to The Village Voice, policemen served the property with a court summons and order to show cause yesterday at 4:30 p.m. Dash and associates are accused of six counts of storing and selling alcoholic beverages without a license. DD172 was first caught violating the liquor code in November 2010 and this past May.
The violations “were conducted in an open and notorious manner and the operators of this establishment appear to have evinced a 'business as usual' attitude in the subject premises."
The club’s actions apparently constitute a “public nuisance,” and plaintiffs are seeking a preliminary injunction from the judge as well as a restraining order.
[September 8]
UPDATE: According to The Village Voice, judge Cynthia S. Kern has signed a stipulation that settles the restraining order against 172 Duane Street as long as owners abide by the liquor laws in the future and agree to provide security guards during events, warrantless inspections by police and abiding by the certificate of occupancy. Dash's company has not operated out of the premises since the beginning of summer.

Ski Beatz Compares Curren$y's "Pilot Talk 1 & 2" to "Reasonable Doubt"

                              Ski Beatz Compares Curren$y's
Ski likens Spitta's "Pilot Talk" LPs to "Reasonable Doubt," and recalls how Jay-Z got him to stop rapping and focus solely on production.
Ski Beatz recently caught up with MTV's Mixtape Daily to discuss his work with New Orleans rapper Curren$y. During the interview, the veteran producer compared Spitta's 2010 Pilot Talk series to former collaborator Jay-Z's Reasonable Doubt, saying that his in-studio chemistry with Curren$y helped produce the same quality of music that he and Hova made on his 1996 debut.
"I feel like the albums I did with Curren$y — Pilot Talk 1 and 2 — are like the Reasonable Doubt[] of this time," he explained. "The music that I chose and gave Curren$y is timeless music; it's gonna be around. Older people listen to Curren$y because the beats — it kinda takes them back. But younger cats listen to it because of the lyrical content and the flows; because they are able to relate to what Curren$y is talking about. That's how it was with Jay: the music that we chose was kinda older-sounding music, but the lyrics was now."
Ski also reminisced on work with Jay-Z on Reasonable Doubt. He said that after hearing him on Original Flavor's "Can I Get Open," he was itching to work with the Brooklyn upstart. He even added that Jay's rhymes made him stop pursuing rapping and focus on more on producing.
"Jay rhymed, and at the moment when I heard him rhyme, I was like, 'This dude gotta get on one of our songs,' " he said. "He was dope! He was the best rapper I've ever heard in my life.  He got on [Original Flavor's] 'Can I Get Open,' and after that, me, personally, I decided to stop rapping and just start producing him solely."
