Hip-Hop Pioneer Grandmaster Caz Drops New Book “Written! The Lyrics Of Grandmaster Caz”

GrandMaster Caz

Hip-Hop pioneer GrandMaster Caz just released a new book centered around his lyrics titled “Written! The Lyrics of GrandMaster Caz.”
The new softback book contains 44-songs written by the legendary Hip-Hop pioneer, who was a member of the legendary Cold Crush Brothers.
GrandMaster Caz is also credited with writing the verse that rapper Big Bank Hank used on the groundbreaking single “Rappers Delight,” by Sugar Hill Gang, who ostracized Hank in later years over the theft.
“Written! The Lyrics of GrandMaster Caz” contains verses from the rap star’s notebook, published for the first time in print.
The release of “Written!” comes on the heels of GrandMaster Caz’ high-profile appearance in Ice-T’s documentary “Something From Nothing: The Art of Rap.”
“Its hard to describe the constant outpouring of love and respect that I have witnessed for Caz over the two years that it took to make our movie,” said “The Art of Rap” producer Paul Toogood said. “Caz has been described as The Robert Johnson of rap; very little recorded music by Caz exists due to him being stuck in a restrictive deal for 20 years. The esteem in which he is held by his peers is quite extraordinary.”
“Written! The lyrics of GrandMaster Caz” is in stores now at lyricbbook.com.
In the coming weeks, the book will be available on Amazon.com and select retailers around the country.

The Top 5 Reasons The South Keeps Winning (and Beating the Rest of You)

by Seandra Sims

2 Chainz

Rap has always been about repping where you’re from. And, although The Bronx is credited as the birthplace of Hip-Hop, over nearly 40 years, the music and culture have spread to just about every city and town in America – and across the globe, too. Repping where you’re from these days might mean shouting out Wichita, Kansas or San Diego, California or Meridian, Mississippi or Toronto, Canada.
Shout whatever region you want, but for the past 15 years, no other locale has been on a mission to rule rap like The South. Check the figures – the most popular artists and chart-topping songs ruling radio and online today are Southern, and the phenomenon is seemingly unstoppable. Ever wonder why? There are reasons. AllHipHop.com lists its “Top 5 Reasons The South Keeps Winning (and Beating the Rest of You)”:

1. Marketing 101: Movements & Styles With Names
DJ Screw
The late DJ Screw
The smartest thing the South ever did was display its pioneering awareness of Marketing 101. The South segmented itself into movements and styles early on, creating a lane for every type of rap listener from “the country.” Just think “Crunk” in Memphis and later Atlanta, “Chopped and Screwed” in Houston, “Electronic-Bass” in Miami, and on and on, for examples of the genius branding of Southern rap.
Yes, the other coasts and regions have had movements and names, too – “Hyphy” in Cali and “Ratchet” in Chicago are two good examples. But, you would be hard-pressed to find as many movements across the country as those saturating the “Dirty South”. Winning.

2. Distinct Cultures That Make For Good Gumbo

With a region that spans across cities including Houston, Atlanta, Charlotte, New Orleans, Memphis, Virginia Beach, and Miami, the South can’t be beat when it comes to stirring up a pot of diverse Hip-Hop gumbo. There are bound to be cultures galore when music and artists come from so many different places – with Luke dancers.
So how does the rest of the country prevail against the strength of all that Southern goodness? Well, they don’t prevail – at least not for right now. Sure, the East Coast has its cultures, but it all feels like too much city with just too many people, and the cultures somehow get lost in the mix. Mile for mile, from dirt roads to country projects and sprawling metropolises, the Dirty South just plain covers the most territory. Winning.

3. Southernplayalistic Gentlemanliness
JUICY J
Juicy J
Rappers from the South personified characters early on that set them apart from their mostly macho, Urban-infused counterparts in other cross-country ‘hoods. Even the reigning prince of the South, 2 Chainz, has a certain Southernly charm, with his molasses slow accent and appreciation for ample women.
Consider Outkast with songs like “Rosa Parks” and “Sorry, Ms. Jackson”, or rappers like Bun B or Killer Mike or David Banner, who govern themselves by a militant cool yet Grandma-honoring, mannerly set of standards. This “Slower Living, Southern Man” persona has allowed for a more diverse set of images to emerge from within their music. From Project Pat to Cee Lo Green to Big K.R.I.T. to current king of the strip clubs Juicy J, and everywhere in between…Winning.

4. A Willingness to Sleep Around
The East Coast, West Coast, and Midwest patented the art of the posse – like N.W.A. (Cali), Boot Camp Clique (East Coast), Bone Thugs N Harmony (Midwest), Wu-Tang Clan (New York), and a zillion more. Cliques and crews ran rampant in ’80s and ’90s rap, especially in those parts of the country – possibly a reflection of the gang culture that permeated their streets.
But, it can be argued that the South was the first to fully embrace the Cross-continental Collaboration Movement that still runs rap today. Is it the way Southerners kindly open their doors and dinner tables to strangers? Nope – it’s probably a result of continuous winning, causing other regions to have to get on board. Once Cash Money and others started looking for talent outside their borders, they ended up creating nearly unstoppable forces – a la Young Money featuring Nicki Minaj (New York), Lil Wayne (New Orleans), Drake (Canada), Tyga (California), etc. etc. Winning.

5. Heck, It’s Where Nearly All Black Americans & Black Music Originated
big-krit-31
Big K.R.I.T.
At the end of the day, props must be paid to the South as the origin place of nearly all Black folks in America. In the bayous of Louisiana and juke joints of Alabama, Black Music was born, drawing from our slave history (the Blues), our African ancestry (Jazz and Gospel), and our super-creativity (Rock and Rap).
It only seems right then that the true rap innovators over the past 10 to 15 years have come from below the Mason-Dixon Line (look that up, kiddies). The range of production styles, sampling, and borrowed influences from other musical genres is endless. Look to a newer generation of Southern rappers and producers for signs of continued musical greatness – artists like Mississippi’s Big K.R.I.T. truly represent the best of what happens when you blend the Old South with the New. Winning.
Agree or disagree? Rep for your coast in the comment section!

Wow! : Rapper Waka Flocka Flame Ordered To Pay $501,000 Over Shooting

Waka Flocka Flame

Atlanta rapper Waka Flocka Flame and the company owned by his manager/mother, have been ordered to pay over $500,000 in damages, over a 2011 shooting in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The incident unfolded in February 2011, when Waka Flocka Flame was upgrading the sound system in his tour bus at a car stereo store in Charlotte.
The rapper, who was wearing $100,000 worth of jewelry, claimed that he noticed two suspicious vehicles pulling into the parking lot of the store.
When three men got out of the two vehicles, Waka Flocka’s security team open-fired, because they claimed the men had threatened the rap star.
Police initially described the altercation as a shootout between Waka Flocka and the victim, named Antonio Stukes.
Stukes was originally charged with attempted armed robbery and other charges, but authorities dropped the charges, due to lack of evidence.
According to Stukes’ lawyer, he was simply attempting to hand Waka Flocka his demo CD, when the security guards shot him.
Stukes was shot in the shoulder during the incident.
Yesterday (December 18), a jury awarded $501,000 in damages against Mizay Entertainment, the company that manages Waka Flocka Flame.

NBC Blogger Calls Chief Keef "A Minstrel Show"

NBC Blogger Calls Chief Keef "A Minstrel Show"

One blogger for NBC may find himself in hot water after he called Chief Keef "a minstrel show."
Whether it's Hip Hop listeners or his fellow Chi-Town emcees, Interscope rapper Chief Keef has been earning some critical disapproval from many members of the industry. Now, however, one blogger has taken his complaints too far by calling Keef's music "a minstrel show."
According to a recent report HipHopWired, Edward McClelland, a Caucasian blogger for Chicago NBC 5, recently attacked Chief Keef and the drill music scene in a blog, calling it "a minstrel show." He said that the shootings at the Sandy Hook Elementary School last week moved him to decry the 17-year-old rapper for his violent lyrics.
"[F]rom what I've heard of it, is pretty lunkheaded: simplistic rhymes, primitive beats. But it's also a window into the world that has made Chicago the murder capital of America, and that piqued my curiosity," wrote McClelland. "Since last week's murders at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, though, I haven't had the stomach for any violent entertainment…I also don't want to pay $14 for the minstrel show of listening to a real live South Side thug. I don't want to support a scene that makes gangbanging a resume builder for music success."

AFTER FACING JAIL TIME, BONE THUGS RAPPER MAKES BIG PROMISE

Written by Cyrus Langhorne
Days after striking a plea deal to avoid time behind bars, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony rapper Krayzie Bone has vowed to change his ways and never get arrested on a driving under the influence charge ever again.

Krayzie said from here on out, he will make sure to have either a designated driver or a car service take the wheel if under the influence.
Krayzie tells TMZ ... He's going to use the classroom time to learn from his mistakes -- and is determined to NEVER get busted for DUI ever again. He says, "This was the first time I was ever in a situation like this and I guarantee it will be the last." Krayzie adds, "From this point forward I will always have a designated driver or car service. If I can't get those ... I will not be drinking at any party I attend, unless I have a responsible way to get home." (TMZ)
Reports of his plea deal popped up online earlier this week.
As part of the plea agreement, Krayzie pled "no contest" yesterday to driving with a blood alcohol level of .08 or higher -- following his July arrest in L.A., when police popped him for DUI. He was sentenced to 3 years summary probation, and must enroll in an alcohol education program asap. Bone had also been charged with an additional DUI count stemming from the arrest, as well as driving without a license, but those two counts were dropped in exchange or the "no contest" plea. (TMZ)
Following the July arrest, Krayzie hopped on Twitter to defend his image.
"They said I was riding dirty but I was simply tryna make it home after a hard day in the studio!," he tweeted Saturday (July 28). (Krayzie Bone's Twitter)
After getting booked, Bone's bail bond was reportedly set for a few thousand dollars.
The 39-year-old rapper, whose real name is Anthony Henderson, was arrested about 12:30 a.m. on Topanga Canyon Boulevard, near the Ventura (101) Freeway, said Los Angeles police Officer Rosario Herrera of the Media Relations office. Henderson was booked for driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, Herrera said. He was held on $5,000 bail, according to the sheriff's department. (Daily News)

KATT WILLIAMS GOES MISSING IN SEATTLE, POLICE SEARCH FOR TROUBLED COMEDIAN

Troubled comedian Katt Williams is reportedly a wanted man in the state of Washington with reports claiming an arrest warrant got issued today (December 12).

Snoop says the former Friday After Next star has him concernedabout what he does next.
Snoop and Katt have been friends for years -- Snoop even appeared in Katt's 2006 comedy special, "The Pimp Chronicles Pt. 1." But yesterday in L.A., Snoop wasn't laughing when we asked how he felt about Katt's recent antics, arrests and impromptu retirement ... telling us, "Katt needs some help man. Somebody needs to really sit him down and get him some help." Snoop continued, "I'm his friend man ... I really wanna see him get some help man before he goes too far." "Whoever really got love for Katt that's around him, you need to take him and go get him some help." (TMZ)
Yesterday, Katt's management team cleared up confusion about his announced retirement.
Earlier this week, a very emotional Katt announced his retirement on a street corner in Seattle ... insisting that he was, "kinda done." But now, Katt's management team says he's undone ... telling us, "Katt is definitely NOT retiring. He will be moving forward with the tour ... Friday is Texas, Saturday New Orleans, and on to Alabama." Management adds, "The reason why he made remarks was due to him feeling totally disrespected by all the things that happen to him in the city of Seattle. He had a moment where he felt very unappreciated. He now just wants to move forward from those unfortunate events and give his fans outstanding shows from this point forward." (TMZ)
A few days prior, Williams said he would remove himself from the stand-up comedy game for good.
"I'm just gonna go ahead and announce my retirement from stand-up," Williams said in an interview. "I'm kinda done. This is, yeah, I've already discussed it with my kids. I wasn't really gonna do it on a Seattle street, I was gonna go to Los Angeles and do it in the offices of ICM or Live Nation." (KOMO)
He got released from police custody after a physical altercation in Seattle last weekend.
Something not so funny is going on with Katt Williams. The actor and stand-up comedian was arrested Sunday after allegedly getting into a bar fight with a family at the World Sports Grille in Seattle. When police arrived on the scene, Williams resisted arrest. The "First Sunday" actor was taken into custody at the King County jail shortly afterward on counts of harassment, assault and obstructing police, though he was released early Monday morning. “No, Virginia. Rick Ross Ain’t Gangsta”: Rap’s X-mas Reality Check

rick-ross

“In the real world these just people with ideas/They just like me and you when the smoke and camera disappear” – “Hip Hop”, Dead Prez
When Virgina “V-Gangsta” O’Hanlon’s homegirl broke the news to her that Santa Claus was a big fat fake, it didn’t faze her one bit. As long as she still got her Lil’ Wayne CD for Christmas, she was good. But years later, when she found out that her new favorite rapper, Rick Ross, wasn’t the gangster she had grown to know and love, she went into a violent rage, followed by a major depression lasting several days…
Recently, mainstream America got hip to something that “the ‘hood” already knew. Their beloved Grammy-nominated gangsta, William “Rick Ross” Roberts wasn’t a gangster after all. He just played one on TV.
This has sent his suburban fans searching for a “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus” type of affirmation. Just like Virginia O’Hanlon, when she wrote the famous letter to theNew York Sun back in 1897, asking for reassurance that the Jolly Ol’ Soul was real after her friends told her that Ol’ St. Nick was just a trick, Rick Ross fans are sheddin’ tears in their eggnog, yellin’ “Say it ain’t so!”
Last week, Rick Ross cancelled the remaining dates of his MMG (Maybach Music Group) Tour, reportedly because of YouTube videos posted by members of The Gangster Disciples who threatened to step to Roberts for shoutin’ out their leader’s name on one of his songs, and using their gang symbol on a CD cover without breakin’ them off a little royalty cash.
To make matters worst, the rapper has beef with convicted drug dealer, Freeway Ricky Ross, of the infamous Iran/Contra/Compton cocaine connection that was alleged in the ’90s by the late reporter, Gary Webb. Apparently, Freeway Ricky Ross is miffed that rapper Rick Ross has the nerve to use his popularity of contributing to the genocide of thousands of children in the ‘hood to sell records that glamorize the genocide of thousands of children in the ‘hood.
rick rossNot to mention the die hard Tupac Shakur fans who are hatin’ on him for having the audacity to proclaim himself the reincarnation of the “father of THUG LIFE.”
However, the main people upset by the revoking of Rick Ross’s ghetto pass are members of his Caucasian crossover fan club who, vicariously, live the ghetto life through their favorite rappers from the comfort of their spacious homes in the ‘burbs.
Someone once said, insubstantially, that 80% of the kids who buy Rap music are white. While we are not sure how he, scientifically, arrived at that figure, he’s probably darn close if you look at whose parents have the most disposable income.
During the mid to late ’70s, Hip \-Hop started as an obscure form of party music barely known outside of four of the five NYC boroughs. However, with the release of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five’s “The Message,” Rap music became White America’s long range telescope for viewing urban blight. During the late ’80s, Public Enemy frontman, Chuck D, proclaimed Rap “the CNN of Black America.” Shortly after this pronouncement, NWA brought Gangsta Rap to the forefront and rappers became the epitome of Tall, Dark and Dumb, the dudes that all of the cool, White guys wanted to be like, and the hip, White chicks wanted to be with.
Grandmaster B_Bud BundyThe best example of the origin of this idea would probably be the miraculous transformation of nerdy “Bud Bundy” to “Grandmaster B” from the early ’90s sitcom, “Married With Children.”
So for White kids, “Gangsta rappers” were the perfect Christmas gift, like a life size, thugged out version of a GI Joe with the kung fu grip. Or Shirley Temple’s “Mr. Bojangles” with street swagger, willing to buck dance at the drop of a dollar.
But last week, the charade came to an abrupt ending, when Middle America had to come to grips with the fact that maybe their superheroes of the ‘hood weren’t so super after all.
They finally had to deal with the reality that it was all one big joke, and the joke was on them. Although the music industry marketing gurus could spin the well known fact in Hip-Hop circles that Rick Ross was a former correctional officer, earning him the title a la rapper 50 Cent, “Officer Ricky,” the idea that a feared Gangsta rapper is scared of gangsters is an unforgivable sin in Hip-Hop. He might as well have done a duet with Barry Manilow.
But it’s not just William Roberts who is perpetratin’ a fraud. Many of the fiercest Gangsta rappers and producers in the industry are actually college educated, from Suge Knight to Sean “Puffy” Combs. Even Robert ‘s fellow Grammy nominee Tauheed “2 Chainz” Epps attended college on an athletic scholarship during the mid ’90s, despite his lyrical content that centers around “big booty hoes.”
But the question is, now that the jack-in-the-box is out of Santa’s bag, where does Hip-Hop go from here?
The music executives can either allow Hip-Hop to grow up and once again become socially relevant, or they can continue on their fool’s errand of trying to fool all of the people all of the time.
History teaches us that they will probably try to make a feeble attempt at the latter. I mean, if they can turn a C.O. into an O.G., I guess anything is possible. But in reality, the future direction of Hip-Hop depends on the gullibility of the consumer.
Just like the cop-out that a parent gives his child when she finds her toy pony hidden in the garage two days before Christmas:
“Santa exists as long as you believe he does.”
So does Gangsta Rap, Virginia. So does Gangsta Rap.”

Game Is Open To G-Unit Reunion With 50 Cent & A Jay-Z Collaboration

Game Is Open To G-Unit Reunion With 50 Cent & A Jay-Z Collaboration

Game says there's a possibility of G-Unit reforming if 50 Cent "lets go of his ego" and shares thoughts on likelihood of a collaboration with Jay-Z.
In promoting his latest project, Jesus Piece, Game has been asked to speak on his past. In one recent interview with BET, Game was asked about past feuds with Jay-Z and 50 Cent. While discussing this, Game shared his feelings on a possible collaboration with Jay-Z and explained how G-Unit could reunite.

"It wasn't that I resented Jay-Z or had any real beef," Game explained, when discussing his lyrical feud with Jigga. "I just wanted to pick a fight and maybe he would spit at me and I could spit at him and get into a lyrical war...I tried and he responded with little lines here and there and I think the possibility of a song happening over the years kind of got tainted. But it's a new day. I'm a new person. I'm a little bit older. Hopefully one day we'll be able to make that happen. If not, I've had a glorious career. I'm on my fifth album and not really looking for anything else to fall out the sky for me so it is what it is."

Jay-Z isn't the only former foe he'd collaborate with. According to Game, he and 50 Cent could collaborate in the future and there's still a possibility of "G-Unit reforming."
What 50 gotta do is let go of his ego. I don't hold grudges. I was mad for the time being when we were going through that and after that, I immediately graduated to a neutral ground where that could have happened but it's 50, man. Once he calms his ego and realizes that there still could be the possibility of G-Unit reforming, then who knows? But I know you can't put together G-Unit without Game and you can't do it without 50," he said. "It's kind of like that John Lennon/Paul McCartney thing. Jimmy Iovine used to say that a lot."
