Mac Miller, whose debut ’Blue Slide Park’ hit shelves on Tuesday (Nov. 8), may become the first independent hip-hop act to top the Billboard charts since Snoop Dogg’s partners Tha Dogg Pound did so in 1995.
While the numbers, as derived by Nielsen SoundScan sales data, are not yet in on the 19-year-old Wiz Khalifa protégé’s debut, the album is being projected to sell upwards of 100,000 copies in its first week.
The last time an indie rap act achieved such a coup was almost exactly 16 years ago, on Nov. 18, 1995, when Tha Dogg Pound’s ’Dogg Food’ sold approximately 278,000 records via Death Row, which was distributed independently by Priority Records.
